A model of Comet 67-P (a.k.a. Churyumov-Gerasimenko) taken at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Open House in Pasadena last October. NASA and the European Space Agency, ESA will attempt to harpoon a lander from their Rosetta Spacecraft onto the surface of Comet 67-P on Wednesday, November 12th. The deep-space comet travels at a speed of over 40,000 miles per hour and measures only 4.5 km. in diameter.

Per ESA, “Comets are considered to be primitive building blocks of the Solar System and may have helped to ‘seed’ Earth with water, perhaps even the ingredients for life. But many fundamental questions about these enigmatic objects remain, and through a comprehensive, in situ study of the comet, Rosetta aims to unlock the secrets within.”

You can catch real-time updates on the historic Rosetta mission, taking place 4 billion miles from earth and spanning more than a decade: HERE.
